ABOUT US

How did Redhan originate?

While we've always wanted to contribute positively to the environmental crisis, we got the idea for Redhan, while we were visiting a Maldivian island. The idea then slowly evolved from there, taking shape into what it is today. You can read our full story here

What does Redhan means?

Redhan is the Maldivian word used to describe bioluminescence by phytoplankton that can be seen in many coastal regions around the world. We chose this name to represent our beautiful nature that needs to be preserved for future generations.

Where is the company based?

Redhan has roots in both the Maldives and the UK. Redhan is a trademark of White Cowrie Private Limited in the Maldives and Redhan Limited is a company that is also registered in the UK.

 Who founded Redhan?

We are two researchers from Maldives, currently finishing our PhDs in Chemistry  & Engineering/Physics.

BIO-CASE

What are the cases made from?

The raw material is a blend of bio-plastics and actual plant fibres. The added biomass doesn’t just improve toughness against drops but it also helps it biodegrade faster. The material uses eco colour derivative, bioplastics and wheat straw - you can see the tiny specks of plant mass in the case giving each case a truly unique look.

Did you invent the material used in your cases?

The case material is our own blend of wheat fibre reinforced bio-composites. There have been significant research done on plant fibre enhanced composites, testing commonly abundant  fibres such as wheat, bamboo, jute and flax. Here is a review of the material properties of such composites from 1999. A lot of work has been done since especially in the field of compostable & biodegradable composites of such nature. Here is a scientific article that discusses the development of a biodegradable composite using wheat fibres and coconut husk. Our case material is based on the extensive research by scientific community on this.

What are the small specks on the case?

The small specks you see on the cases are plant fibres (wheat fibres) that add toughness and accelerate the compostability of the material. These little specks give the cases a truly unique look.

How do the cases feel?

Our cases can be best described as the perfect intermediate between soft and hard. It is not too soft that it feels rubbery and slips off of your phone and not too hard that it cannot resist drop impacts.

How long does Redhan Case take to biodegrade?

The cases biodegrade within 6 months to 36 months when disposed.

Is it an impact case?

Our cases can protect your phone from everyday drops as the material can absorb shock and there is a lip around the screen and around the camera for protection. However, it hasn't undergone the necessary testing to be called an impact case.

Why do you not have a phone case for my phone?

We unfortunately started with only limited number of phone models and are always working to diversify our range. We gauge the interest of our community before working on new models to minimise waste - so do let us know if there is a model you would very much like to see. Also, we announce new model arrivals on our socials, so make sure to stay tuned.

 How are the cases packaged?

All our products come in minimal eco-friendly packaging. The method of packaging depends on how the cases are delivered. For cases that are hand delivered by our delivery team (in Maldives), the cases come in our custom case packaging made from Kraft paper.

For the cases that are posted, we opt for Kraft paper envelopes  to minimise the associated waste.

Does Redhan Case have a warranty?

We have a 90 days return or exchange policy - no questions asked! If you decide to keep the product after this duration and notice any material or workmanship defects, we have a 1 year warranty. Please send us a message to have it replaced at no extra charge. - we cover the shipping too! :)

AIRPOD CASE

What are the airpod cases made from?

Our airpod cases are made from the same material as our phone cases. The raw material is a blend of bio-plastics and actual plant fibres. The added biomass doesn’t just improve toughness against drops but it also helps it biodegrade faster. The material uses eco colour derivative, bioplastics and wheat straw.

You can read more about this on the Bio-Case section of our FAQ.

How do I install the airpod case?

To install the Redhan airpod case, you need to simply slide it on to the airpod. It fits snug and protects the airpods from drops and scratches.

LOOP

What is Redhan Loop made from?

Redhan Loop is made from cork leather / cork fabric, which is obtained from the bark of cork oak trees. Our cork leather backing includes cotton as well as cardboard - yes, 100% of Redhan Loop comes from plants!

Why do you say that cork leather is sustainable?

In addition to being completely vegan and biodegradable, cork leather does not require much processing which means the ecological footprint of it is extremely low compared to the production of most materials.

Also, the extraction of cork from the tree itself is a surprisingly eco-friendly process. When the tree is 25 years old the cork oak bark can be harvested every 9 years for 200 years and the harvested cork trees absorb three times more CO2 than the unharvested trees!

Synthetic leather is vegan - why would I go for cork leather?

It's true that synthetic leather doesn't come from animals (is cruelty free), but it is fossil fuel based and takes at least 500 years to start breaking down. This is in contrast to cork leather which is 100% natural! (read the question above to see why cork leather is sustainable).

What Loop size is best for me?

Loop mini is the perfect size for use with one finger and Loop regular is suitable for use with two fingers. If you are unsure which one would be best for you, send us a quick message - we would love to help you out.

How do I apply the Loop?

Before applying the loop, wipe the surface of your phone case. After deciding where you want the Loop to go, simply peel and press it onto the phone case. Do make sure you press it in for at least 2 minutes. The glue reaches its maximum adhesiveness in 24 hours, so do be gentle with it until then.

CASE CARE

How do I keep the Redhan Case clean?

Just like other bright cases, our light cases can pick up dirt and stains, due its porous nature. They can stay clean with a bit of love and care:-

  • Mild stains and dirt should come off with some warm water and dishwashing soap and a sponge / towel.
  • For more troublesome build up of dirt or grime, we suggest soaking the case in half white vinegar and half water for about 15 mins and then washing it with warm soapy (dishwashing) water. Alternatively, isopropyl alcohol is also very effective.

Getting a light case : Our light cases tend to pick up (at least show) dirt and grime more easily and if this is something that you want to avoid, we'd suggest going for a dark case.

Otherwise we would suggest taking care when putting the phone in your bag (away from things that may stain the case like pens, pencils, food etc). Stains from denim pockets are the hardest to remove completely, so avoid denim pockets with our lighter cases.

What do I do if my case gets dirty?

If you're unable to clean the case using the above methods, please get in touch with us. We would love to sort this out for you. :)

CHARITIES

Who do you donate to?

We donate at least 5% of each sale (not just profit) to charities and organisations that are working in the trenches to protect and preserve our planet.

Currently we donate to the following organisations:

  • Palm Case & 'Sangu' Phone Case- 5% of sales of these case will be donated to BeLeaf Maldives.
  • Shark Frenzy Case & Whale Phone Case - for these cases we donate 5% to Maldives Whale Shark Research Project. MWSRP is a research-based conservation charity dedicated to studying & conserving whale sharks in the Indian Ocean.
  • Our Planet Phone Case - 15% of the sale goes towards the relief of COVID-19. We donate to Maldives Red Crescent in the Maldives and WHO COVID-19 Response Fund outside of Maldives.
  • Seagrass Phone Case - we plant 3 trees via onetreeplanted for each of this case to support reforestation and to help fight climate change.
  • Turtle Phone Case - Turtle case will support turtle conservation by giving 5% of the sales to Olive Ridley Project.
  • 'Hiriga' Phone Case- 5% of sales of these case will be donated to BeLeaf Maldives.
  • AirPod Cases 5% of sales of these case will be donated to BeLeaf Maldives.

Why do you plant a tree for each product?

We plant a tree for each product sold via OneTreePlanted, to carbon compensate the production & shipping process of your case. As the tree grows, your purchase will become carbon neutral and eventually negative over the course of time.
